Hamad International Airport (DOH)
Airport Overview
Hamad International Airport (HIA), bearing the IATA code DOH and ICAO code OTHH, is Qatar's sole commercial international airport and one of the most celebrated aviation facilities in the world. Located on the southeastern coast of Doha in the Umm Al-Houl district, built largely on reclaimed land along the Arabian Gulf shore approximately 15 km from central Doha, the airport opened in May 2014, replacing the former Doha International Airport. In the eleven years since opening, it has ascended from a promising new-build to a globally recognized benchmark for airport design, passenger experience, and transit hub efficiency — achieving the Skytrax World's Best Airport title three times and ranking #2 globally in 2025.
The airport's story is inseparable from Qatar Airways, the state-owned carrier that uses DOH as its exclusive global hub and which together with Qatar's sovereign wealth infrastructure funded and shaped every aspect of the airport's design philosophy. Qatar Airways is one of the fastest-growing and most awarded airlines in the world, operating one of the largest and youngest fleets in commercial aviation, and its ambitions directly drove the scale and luxury standards built into Hamad International. The airline and the airport operate as an integrated system: Qatar Airways' 24-hour schedule of departures — including overnight "red-eye" operations essential to connecting passengers between East and West — required the airport to operate fully around the clock with no service interruptions, a commitment that distinguishes DOH from most competitors.
In 2024, Hamad International served 52.7 million passengers, a 15% increase over 2023 and a 35.9% rise compared to pre-pandemic 2019 levels, placing it among the top ten busiest airports globally for international passengers according to ACI World's 2024 figures. Aircraft movements reached 279,000 (+10% year-on-year), cargo handled totaled 2.6 million tonnes (+12%), and the airport processed 41.3 million bags. Local (point-to-point) passenger traffic grew 16% — outpacing transit traffic growth for the first time — driven by Qatar's expanding appeal as a tourism destination. The airport connected travelers to 197 destinations served by 55 airlines, with Qatar Airways alone reaching well over 150 destinations on its network. New airline partners in 2024 included China Southern Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Japan Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, and Akasa Air. Traffic to China surged 87%, while Europe's mature markets — UK, Germany, Spain, France — all posted double-digit growth.
The most significant physical development of 2025 was the opening of new Concourses D and E in March, expanding the terminal footprint by 14% to 845,000 square metres and increasing the total number of aircraft contact gates from 45 to 62 — nearly 40% more than before, dramatically reducing the bus transfers that had been a friction point for some passengers. This expansion boosted annual passenger capacity to over 65 million. The airport marked its 10th anniversary in 2024 and simultaneously celebrated November–December passenger volumes that surpassed even the extraordinary FIFA World Cup 2022 peak, signaling that Doha's transformation from a transit waypoint into a genuine destination is accelerating.
What distinguishes Hamad International from its regional competitors is the synthesis of Qatari cultural identity, global luxury standards, and operational efficiency embedded into a unified architectural vision. The terminal building — designed by HOK architects — is a single continuous wave-form structure with a curvilinear roof of perforated steel evoking desert dunes and ocean waves. Inside, The Orchard, a vast indoor tropical garden spanning thousands of square metres in the North Terminal, brings a remarkable living green landscape into the air-conditioned interior, complete with real trees, running water, and tropical birds — an audacious antidote to the sterile aesthetics of conventional airports. The airport hosts a world-class art collection, including Urs Fischer's celebrated giant yellow Lamp Bear sculpture at the South Plaza, works by KAWS, Tom Friedman, and Damien Hirst integrated throughout the terminal. Shopping is anchored by Qatar Duty Free, which operates one of the highest-grossing duty-free retail operations in the world — earning DOH the Skytrax Best Airport Shopping award for three consecutive years through 2025. Qatar Airways' own lounges at DOH, particularly the Al Safwa First Class Lounge and the dual Al Mourjan Business Lounges, are consistently ranked among the finest airport lounges on Earth, combining five-star hotel aesthetics with spa facilities, fine dining, and an extraordinary level of service density.
The airport's strategic position — situated equidistant between major population centers in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania — makes Doha a near-perfect geographic transit hub. For a traveler flying London to Singapore, Sydney to Rome, or Nairobi to New York, a Qatar Airways connection through DOH often represents the most time-efficient single-stop routing available, frequently with layover times of 1.5–3 hours in what is arguably the world's most comfortable transit environment.

Terminals & Gates
Overview: One Terminal, Multiple Worlds
Unlike most major hub airports, Hamad International is designed as a single continuous terminal building of extraordinary scale and visual cohesion. The building stretches in a sweeping arc along the coast, divided functionally into a South Section (the original 2014 opening) and a North Section (expanded progressively, with Concourses D and E opening in March 2025). The terminal spans 845,000 square metres following the 2025 expansion — a 14% increase — making it one of the largest airport terminal buildings in the world. Despite its scale, it is designed for intuitive wayfinding: departures are on Level 3 (top), arrivals on Level 1–2 (ground), and the central duty-free and transit area occupies the multi-level midsection.
An internal Sky Train (automated people-mover, free of charge) connects the South and North sections of the terminal quickly and comfortably, making it straightforward to access all gates regardless of where you arrive. The terminal is served by a total of 62 aircraft contact gates (post-March 2025 expansion), up from 45 previously — dramatically reducing the proportion of passengers requiring bus transfers to remote stands.
South Terminal (Original, 2014)
The South Terminal encompasses Concourses A and B (the primary departure gates for the majority of Qatar Airways' schedule) and the South Plaza, which houses the most celebrated lounges and some of the most prominent retail. Key features include:
- Al Safwa First Class Lounge (Level 3, South Plaza): Qatar's exclusive First Class sanctuary, accessible only to Qatar Airways First Class passengers, Privilege Club Platinum members traveling Business Class, and oneworld First Class passengers. Features à la carte dining by executive chefs, a full luxury spa with individual treatment rooms and jacuzzis, a private cinema suite, a well-appointed business centre, and immediate dedicated access to immigration and security desks. Purchase access is approximately QAR 600 (~$165) for eligible non-qualifying travelers. Open 24 hours.
- Al Mourjan Business Lounge South (Level 3, Concourse A): One of the world's most acclaimed business lounges. Designed with water features, marble, and a resort-like atmosphere across two expansive levels. Features include à la carte and extensive buffet dining, a full bar, private family areas, a children's games room, shower suites, business centre with conference rooms, and a quiet zone. Accessible to Qatar Airways and oneworld Business Class passengers; Economy Class passengers may purchase access for QAR 450 (~$124). Open 24 hours.
- Urs Fischer's Lamp Bear: The iconic 7-metre-tall yellow bear sculpture — an internationally recognized artwork by Swiss artist Urs Fischer — situated in the South Plaza near the Al Mourjan South entrance. One of the most photographed artworks in any airport globally.
- Qatar Duty Free South Plaza: Luxury retail including Harrods Tea Room, dedicated fashion and watch boutiques, cosmetics, spirits, and confectionery across an impressive retail boulevard.
- Al Maha Lounges: Paid-access lounges (from QAR 300) operated for economy passengers and lower-tier status holders; located at Gate A1 (Level 1, South) and throughout the terminal at various concourse entry points. Facilities include Wi-Fi, showers, dining, children's areas, and prayer rooms.
North Terminal (Expansion, including Concourses C, D, E)
The North Terminal is the airport's most dramatic architectural achievement and the centerpiece of its 2025 expansion. Concourse C opened progressively from 2021 onward; Concourses D and E were inaugurated in March 2025. The North Terminal's defining feature is The Orchard — a vast indoor tropical garden that serves as the sensory and spatial heart of the expansion.
- The Orchard: An indoor tropical garden spanning the full height and width of the North Terminal's central atrium. Real trees reaching several storeys, tropical plants, running water channels, and — in what is perhaps the airport's most extraordinary touch — live tropical birds inhabit the space. The Orchard is visible from both landside and airside areas of the terminal and from the Al Mourjan Business Lounge The Garden above it. It is freely accessible to all passengers transiting through the North Terminal and has become one of the most celebrated spaces in global aviation architecture, frequently compared to Changi Airport's Jewel in Singapore.
- Al Mourjan Business Lounge The Garden (North Terminal, Concourse C, above The Orchard): Qatar Airways' newest and most spectacular business lounge, spanning 7,390 sqm and accommodating up to 707 passengers. Positioned directly above The Orchard with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the living garden below. Features 24 private quiet rooms (18 single, 6 double — up to 6-hour stays, with recliner chairs, work desks, wardrobe, mini-fridge), 7 Dior spa treatment rooms, a fitness studio, an extensive dining area with buffet and à la carte service, a staffed cocktail/bistro bar, a family and game room, a children's area, prayer rooms, shower facilities, and the Louis Vuitton Café by Yannick Alléno — a partnership with the luxury house creating a dedicated restaurant/café space with LV-branded design and a menu by the three-Michelin-star French chef. Access: same as Al Mourjan South (QA/oneworld Business Class, or QAR 450 purchase). Open 24 hours.
- Concourses D and E (opened March 2025): The newest gates at HIA, featuring self-boarding technology, cutting-edge smart infrastructure, and enhanced sustainability design including energy-efficient HVAC and solar integration. Adding 17 new aircraft contact gates (total now 62), these concourses serve Qatar Airways' expanding network and significantly reduce bus-transfer operations. New retail and dining options opened concurrently with the concourses, described by airport management as "next-generation" retail and dining experiences.
- Oryx Garden Hotel (North Terminal): A transit hotel located directly within the terminal building, accessible airside without exiting security. Rooms and suites with full hotel amenities, ideal for long layovers. Open 24 hours. (See Hotels section.)
- Platinum and Gold Lounges North (Level 2, Concourse C area): For oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members; spacious, well-appointed facilities with dining and shower access. Better regarded than the South counterparts by many frequent travelers due to lower crowding levels.
Art Collection
Hamad International Airport maintains one of the most significant permanent art collections of any airport in the world. Works are integrated throughout the terminal rather than segregated into gallery spaces, creating an immersive cultural encounter for all passengers. Artists represented include Urs Fischer (Lamp Bear), KAWS (What Party), Tom Friedman, Damien Hirst, and regional Qatari and Arab artists. The curation is managed in partnership with Qatar Museums, the government body overseeing the country's extraordinary museum programme (which includes the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar, both in Doha).
---Transportation Guide
Getting to and from Hamad International Airport
Hamad International Airport is approximately 15 km from central Doha and benefits from excellent road infrastructure built to handle FIFA World Cup 2022 traffic volumes. The airport is served by the Doha Metro Red Line, taxi, public bus, and private transfer options. Unlike many Gulf airports, DOH has direct rapid transit access to the city, making it possible to reach major Doha districts in under 20 minutes without a car.
Doha Metro — Red Line
The Doha Metro Red Line provides the fastest, cheapest, and most reliable public transport connection between the airport and central Doha. The metro station is located inside the arrivals terminal building (follow signs to Hamad International Airport T1 Metro Station). The Red Line runs directly to Msheireb Downtown Doha Station — the central interchange hub where all three metro lines (Red, Green, Gold) converge — in approximately 12–15 minutes, from where any part of Doha is accessible. The metro also serves the Corniche, West Bay business district, Souq Waqif, and connects onward to Lusail City (where many FIFA 2022 venues are located, and an increasingly important business/residential district).
- Journey time to Msheireb (city center): ~12–15 minutes
- Fare: QAR 2 (~$0.55 USD) single ticket; QAR 6 day pass; QAR 10 rechargeable travel card (card itself costs QAR 10, loaded separately)
- Ticket classes: Standard, Family (priority seating, family-friendly carriages), Gold Class (premium, air-conditioned, more spacious — higher fare)
- Operating hours: Saturday–Thursday approximately 6:00 AM – 1:00 AM; Friday approximately 2:00 PM – 1:00 AM (hours may vary during Ramadan — verify at Qatar Rail website)
- Frequency: Every 5–8 minutes during peak hours; every 10–15 minutes off-peak
- Important: The metro does NOT run 24 hours. Passengers arriving after approximately 11:30 PM must use taxi or pre-booked transfer
- Children under 5: Free travel on all public transport
- Ticket purchase: Self-service vending machines at the metro station inside arrivals; metro staff available to assist. Card and cash accepted
Taxi (Karwa)
Karwa is Qatar's official state taxi operator — the only company traditionally permitted to pick up passengers from HIA. Karwa taxis are turquoise-coloured, government-owned, metered, regulated, and available 24 hours a day. The taxi stand is located to the left of the Arrivals Hall exit — follow "Taxi" signs. A taxi coordinator is present to assign vehicles; no hailing or negotiation required. All taxis from the airport begin with a mandatory non-negotiable starting fare (airport flag-fall) of QAR 25 (~$6.85 USD), after which distance-based metering applies.
- West Bay / Corniche: approximately QAR 40–60 (~$11–16)
- Souq Waqif / Msheireb Downtown: approximately QAR 50–60 (~$13–16)
- The Pearl / Lusail: approximately QAR 70–90 (~$19–25)
- Journey time to central Doha: 15–25 minutes in normal traffic; longer during peak hours (7–9 AM, 4–7 PM)
- XL taxis (up to 6 passengers): Available at the taxi zone for slightly higher fare — ideal for families or groups with large luggage
- Payment: Metered; accepts cash (QAR). Card acceptance varies by vehicle — have cash available
- Night surcharge: Additional charges apply for late-night journeys; confirm with coordinator
Uber (as of June 2025)
As of June 2025, Uber has been permitted to pick up passengers at Hamad International Airport, though currently only Uber Black and Uber XL options are available for airport pickups — standard UberX is not available at the terminal pickup zone. Pickup is from the East Car Park short-term parking building; follow Uber-branded signs throughout the arrivals terminal to the designated pickup zone. Uber fares are generally comparable to or higher than Karwa taxis for the same journey. For passengers with the app already configured, Uber offers the convenience of cashless payment and known fare before departure.
Public Bus (Mowasalat / Karwa Bus)
Bus services operated by Mowasalat (Qatar's state transport company, also operator of Karwa taxis) depart from the Bus Pavilion located to the right of the Arrivals Hall. Buses are clean, air-conditioned, and staffed. Key routes include Route 747 (operating daily approximately 4:50 AM – 11:50 PM, serving Al Ghanim Bus Station near Souq Waqif metro station). Tickets cost QAR 3 single (with travel card) or QAR 10 cash; journey to the city center takes approximately 40 minutes. Luggage can be carried on board. Bus is the most economical but least convenient option for international arrivals with significant luggage.
Car Rental
All major international car rental companies operate counters at Hamad International Airport, located in the arrivals area before the exit. Available brands include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, and local operators. Rental car collection is from the designated car park adjacent to the terminal. An international driving permit (IDP) or a driving licence from qualifying countries is required. Driving in Doha is straightforward with modern road infrastructure, GPS navigation, and English road signage throughout. Fuel is inexpensive by international standards — Qatar heavily subsidises petrol.
Private Transfer / Limousine
Pre-booked private transfers with fixed pricing, meet-and-greet service, and English-speaking professional drivers are widely available from various operators. Qatar Airways' own Limousine Service offers transfers for First and Business Class passengers as part of their ticket, with luxury vehicles (typically S-Class Mercedes or equivalent) available from a dedicated premium pickup zone. Luxury limousine services are also available to all passengers at premium pricing. For groups of 3–4 passengers, a pre-booked private transfer often costs no more than two Karwa taxis and provides superior comfort, fixed pricing, and luggage assistance.
| Transport | Time to City Center | Price (QAR) | Hours | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Doha Metro (Red Line) | 12–15 min | QAR 2–6 | ~6 AM – 1 AM | Solo travelers, budget, speed |
| Karwa Taxi | 15–25 min | QAR 40–70 | 24/7 | Convenience, late night, luggage |
| Uber (Black/XL only) | 15–25 min | QAR 50–90 | 24/7 | Cashless payment preference |
| Public Bus | ~40 min | QAR 3–10 | ~4:50 AM – 11:50 PM | Budget, no luggage |
| Private Transfer | 15–25 min | QAR 100–250+ | 24/7 | Families, groups, maximum comfort |
Hotels Near the Airport
Hotels Inside the Airport (Airside — No Passport Required)
Oryx Airport Hotel (South Terminal, airside) is the original airport transit hotel, located post-security and accessible without an entry visa or passport stamp. It offers standard rooms, suites, and day-use rooms for passengers on long layovers who want a genuine sleep in a proper bed with full hotel amenities. Facilities include a pool, gym, restaurant, and bar. Rooms are available for full overnight stays or by the hour (minimum typically 6 hours for day-use). Rates vary seasonally but typically range from QAR 400–900 (~$110–$250) for overnight stays. Advance booking is strongly recommended, especially for overnight layovers.
Oryx Garden Hotel (North Terminal, airside), the newer of the two airport hotels, opened alongside the North Terminal expansion. Also accessible without a visa or passport stamp, it is positioned near The Orchard and offers a more contemporary design aesthetic reflecting the garden concept of the surrounding terminal. Facilities are comparable to the Oryx Airport Hotel. Day-use and overnight rates available; advance booking recommended.

For transit passengers with layovers of 5 hours or more, Qatar Airways operates a Stopover Programme offering subsidised or complimentary hotel nights in Doha (depending on fare class and availability), along with optional city tours and cultural experiences. Business and First Class passengers often receive complimentary hotel accommodation. Economy Class passengers can book subsidised hotel rates (from approximately $15–$75/night at participating 4 and 5-star hotels, depending on availability). The programme is bookable via the Qatar Airways website during or after ticket purchase and represents exceptional value for passengers who would otherwise spend an extended layover in the terminal.
---Parking Options & Rates
On-Airport Parking
Hamad International Airport offers multi-storey and surface parking directly connected to the terminal. Given that Qatar has a large expatriate population that frequently drives to the airport, parking facilities are extensive and professionally managed. There are two primary parking zones: Short-term (East Car Park) and Long-term, supplemented by Premium Parking (closest to terminal, Qatar Airways passengers only) and Valet Service.
Short-Term Parking (East Car Park)
| Duration | Rate (QAR) | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|
| First hour | QAR 10 | ~$2.75 |
| 2nd hour | QAR 10 | ~$2.75 |
| 3rd hour onward | QAR 10/hour | ~$2.75/hr |
| Maximum daily cap | QAR 100 | ~$27 |
Premium Parking (Qatar Airways passengers only)
| Duration | Rate (QAR) |
|---|---|
| First hour | QAR 30 |
| Second hour | QAR 20 |
| Third hour | QAR 10 |
Long-Term Parking
Long-term parking rates apply for stays exceeding 24 hours. Shuttle bus services connect the long-term car park to the terminal, operating 24/7. Pre-booking online earns up to 20% discount on long-term parking fees — recommended for stays of multiple days.
Valet Service
Valet service is available for premium convenience. Drop-off at the departures curb near Gate 1; collection from the arrivals lane near Gate 2. Rates are at a premium above standard parking. Payment at valet desk upon collection.
Practical Notes
All parking facilities accept credit cards. The East Car Park is also the designated Uber pickup zone — passengers using Uber will walk from the arrivals hall following Uber-branded signage to the East Car Park pickup area. For passengers with early-morning or late-night international flights and no transit need, dropping someone at the terminal curbside (short "kiss-and-fly" stop) is free for the first few minutes at designated drop-off zones.
---Services & Facilities
Wi-Fi
Free, unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout Hamad International Airport — both landside and airside. Connection is straightforward: select the "HIA_FREE_WIFI" network, accept the terms page, and connect without registration or time limits. Speed is generally good throughout the terminal, with fiber-optic infrastructure supporting the high traffic demands of a major international hub. Qatar Airways' premium lounges offer dedicated, faster Wi-Fi networks for lounge guests. Power outlets and USB charging points are widely available at gate seating areas, lounge spaces, and food court areas throughout the terminal.
Qatar Entry Visa
Qatar operates one of the most permissive visa policies in the Gulf region. Citizens of over 100 countries are eligible for visa-free entry or visa on arrival for stays of up to 30–90 days, including most European Union citizens, US, UK, Canadian, Australian, and Japanese passport holders. Eligibility and duration vary by nationality — check the Qatar e-Visa portal or Qatar Airways website before travel. Passengers transiting through Doha without exiting the terminal do not require a visa regardless of nationality. For the Qatar Stopover Programme, hotels and tours can be booked without requiring a separate visa application for eligible nationalities — the visa is processed automatically as part of the stopover booking.

Shopping
Qatar Duty Free at Hamad International is among the world's top-grossing airport duty-free operations, earning the Skytrax Best Airport Shopping award for three consecutive years (2023, 2024, 2025). The offer spans luxury fashion (Chanel, Cartier, Bulgari, Dior, Louis Vuitton — including the dedicated LV Café in Al Mourjan The Garden), watches, jewellery, cosmetics, perfumes (exceptional Arabic oud and bespoke fragrance selection), electronics, spirits, tobacco, Qatari artisan products, and an extensive food and confectionery hall. Harrods Tea Room operates within the South Plaza, offering a British luxury tea experience alongside Qatar's own heritage hospitality. Duty-free purchases are available for departing and transit passengers. Qatar residents and locally-departing passengers should note some restrictions on alcohol purchases.
Dining
DOH offers a broad range of dining options across price points and cuisine types, integrated throughout both the South and North sections of the terminal. Highlights include the Harrods Tea Room (South Plaza, upscale British afternoon tea and light meals), Louis Vuitton Café by Yannick Alléno (Al Mourjan The Garden, a remarkable restaurant by a three-Michelin-star chef, accessible to lounge guests), a wide array of international quick-service restaurants, a dedicated halal food court, traditional Qatari cuisine outlets, and a 24-hour grab-and-go zone adjacent to the gate areas for late-night arrivals and departures. All food served at DOH is halal-certified; alcohol is available in the business lounges and certain non-public dining areas for eligible passengers.
The Orchard
The Orchard is Hamad International's signature indoor tropical garden, located in the North Terminal atrium and accessible to all passengers transiting through the northern concourses. Real tropical trees up to 7 metres tall, flowering plants, water features, and live tropical birds inhabit a climate-controlled environment maintained at comfortable temperatures despite Qatar's extreme summer heat. The Orchard is visible from multiple levels of the terminal and serves as both a visual focal point and a genuine sensory respite for passengers on long transits. Free to enter; no ticket required. The Al Mourjan Business Lounge The Garden is positioned directly above and overlooking The Orchard, allowing lounge guests uninterrupted views of the living garden.
Family and Children Facilities
- Family check-in lanes and dedicated family security lanes throughout
- Nursing/baby care rooms with changing facilities in all concourse areas — look for the parent-and-child symbol on terminal maps
- Children's play areas in multiple locations, including within the Al Maha Lounges and the Al Mourjan The Garden Lounge
- The Muzn Sensory Lounge (Gates C7–C9, free, 24h) for children with sensory processing needs
- Unaccompanied Minor Lounge (Concourse C, Qatar Airways operated)
- Stroller-friendly access throughout; elevators serving all levels
Accessibility (PRM Services)
Hamad International Airport provides comprehensive services for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM). Wheelchair assistance is available at all check-in counters and throughout the terminal — request from your airline at least 48 hours before departure. Electric mobility scooters and dedicated assistance lanes are available. All levels are accessible by elevator. Audio guides for visually impaired passengers, hearing loop systems at information desks, and dedicated accessible restrooms are installed throughout. The Muzn Sensory Lounge represents a standout commitment to neurodiverse travelers not commonly found at other major airports.
Currency and ATMs
The currency of Qatar is the Qatari Riyal (QAR), pegged to the US Dollar at approximately 3.64 QAR = $1 USD. ATMs accepting international Visa, Mastercard, and Amex cards are available throughout the arrivals hall and the terminal. Currency exchange counters (operated by Travelex and local operators) are located in the arrivals lobby and pre-security areas. For most nationalities, credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted at airport retail, dining, and transport. However, Karwa taxis traditionally require cash — bring QAR 50–100 in cash for taxi fares or ground transport upon arrival.
Luggage Storage
Luggage storage is NOT available inside the airport terminal itself, a notable gap that travelers planning city excursions on layovers should be aware of. If departing airside for a Doha stopover, the hotel options (Oryx Airport Hotel, Oryx Garden Hotel) can store luggage for guests using day-use rooms. Mall of Qatar and Medina Centrale at Pearl-Qatar have baggage storage facilities accessible to city visitors. For most layover passengers, the practical solution is to store luggage with the transit hotel or travel light into the city.
Smoking
Smoking is prohibited throughout the terminal building including all departure lounges. Designated outdoor smoking areas are available in the arrivals zone before re-entering the secure terminal. Some airline lounges maintain designated smoking rooms (enclosed, ventilated) — check individual lounge listings. E-cigarettes and vaping devices are subject to Qatar's tobacco regulations; import and use are restricted. Travelers carrying vaping devices should check current Qatar customs regulations before arrival.
Prayer Facilities
Prayer rooms are available throughout the terminal in both South and North sections, clearly signposted with both Arabic and English directions. Ablution (wudu) facilities are adjacent to prayer rooms. The Al Mourjan The Garden Lounge includes dedicated prayer rooms for lounge guests. The airport operates on Islamic schedules — prayer times are observed, and during the holy month of Ramadan, terminal food and beverage outlets may adjust operating hours (many remain open in restricted areas or operate after Iftar).
Medical Services
Medical clinics operate within the terminal building with 24-hour coverage. Pharmacies are located landside and airside. AEDs (defibrillators) are installed throughout all concourse areas. Passengers requiring special medical assistance or traveling with medical equipment should notify their airline in advance for coordinated support through the Hamad International Airport assistance desk.
---Airlines & Destinations
Qatar Airways — The Hub Carrier
Qatar Airways (IATA: QR) is the overwhelming dominant carrier at DOH, operating approximately 90%+ of all flights. A member of the oneworld alliance since 2013, Qatar Airways consistently ranks among the world's top 3 airlines in Skytrax ratings and operates one of the youngest and most technologically advanced fleets in commercial aviation, with a particular emphasis on the Airbus A350 family and Boeing 777 variants. The airline operates a 24-hour schedule from Doha, with concentrated departure banks in the early morning (4–9 AM), afternoon (1–6 PM), and late evening (9 PM–2 AM) that are optimized for connecting passengers from Europe, Africa, and the Americas with flights to Asia, Australasia, and the Indian Subcontinent — and vice versa.
Qatar Airways' network from DOH spans over 150 destinations across 6 continents. The airline added Osaka, Hamburg, Lisbon, Toronto, and other new routes in 2024.

Pro Tips for Hamad International Airport
- The Doha Metro metro station is INSIDE the arrivals building — do not exit the terminal to look for it. Follow the Metro/Rail signs from the baggage claim area. It is the cheapest, fastest, and most air-conditioned way into the city for solo travelers, and the QAR 2 (~$0.55) fare is genuinely one of the world's great airport transport bargains.
- If you are transiting and want to visit The Orchard, take the free Sky Train to the North Terminal — it runs continuously and takes only a few minutes. The Orchard is visible and accessible from the concourse level, no lounge access required. It's the best free experience in any airport in the world.
- The Lamp Bear (yellow bear sculpture by Urs Fischer) in the South Plaza near the Al Mourjan South entrance is one of the most photographed artworks in aviation. It is located to the LEFT of the main South Plaza escalators as you approach from security — easy to miss if you're rushing to the gate.
- For early-morning departure banks (4–8 AM), check-in and security queues for Qatar Airways are at their longest. These correspond to the 'eastbound' departure wave (flights to Asia, Australia, Indian subcontinent). If you have lounge access, use Qatar Airways' dedicated First/Business check-in lanes and fast-track security — the difference can be 45–60 minutes on a busy morning.
- Book the Qatar Stopover Programme before your trip if you have a layover of 5 hours or more — Business and First Class passengers often receive a complimentary hotel night in Doha at a 5-star property. Economy passengers can access heavily subsidised rates (sometimes as low as $15–20/night). This is one of aviation's best-kept value secrets and transforms a long layover into a genuinely appealing Doha short-break.
- If you have Priority Pass or lounge access, arrive early enough to properly experience the airport. The Al Mourjan The Garden Lounge (North Terminal) is the most spectacular business lounge in the world for most travelers' money — allow at least 90 minutes to appreciate it fully. The 24 quiet rooms get booked up quickly on overnight departures; request one immediately upon entry if you need rest.
- Bring QAR 50–100 in cash for arrival — Karwa taxis traditionally require cash payment and ATMs can have queues at peak arrival times. The Metro is contactless and card-friendly for departures, but arriving at 2 AM with no cash and a need for a taxi is a common friction point for first-timers.
- If flying Qatar Airways Business Class, know which Al Mourjan lounge you're in: South (Level 3, South Plaza, near the Lamp Bear) or The Garden (North, above The Orchard). They are connected by the free Sky Train, but first-timers frequently miss The Garden lounge entirely — it requires a deliberate trip to the North Terminal and is worth every minute.
- Assuming the Doha Metro runs 24 hours — it does NOT. Last trains from the airport are approximately 10:19 PM on Sunday–Thursday and 11:19 PM on Thursday–Friday (Qatari weekend runs Thursday–Friday). Many international flights arrive after midnight. If your flight lands at 1 AM, you need a Karwa taxi or pre-booked transfer — there is no metro. Check your arrival time against metro operating hours before landing.
- Underestimating the Qatar Airways check-in queue at peak times. Hamad International is a single-terminal airport, and Qatar Airways operates massive simultaneous departure banks. During the 4–8 AM and 9 PM–midnight peaks, check-in queues for economy passengers without online check-in can exceed 45 minutes. Check in online via the Qatar Airways app (available 24 hours before departure), drop bags at the dedicated bag drop, and proceed directly to security.
- Forgetting that there is NO luggage storage in the airport. This catches many layover travelers who plan to explore Doha. The solution is to either book an Oryx Hotel day-use room (which allows bag storage), check luggage through on eligible through-fares, or accept carrying your bags into the city — Doha's metro system handles luggage comfortably.
