Airport Overview
Munich Airport, officially named Flughafen München „Franz Josef Strauß" in honour of the long-serving Bavarian Minister-President, is Germany's second-busiest international airport and one of Europe's most celebrated aviation hubs. Located 28.5 km (17.7 miles) northeast of Munich city centre near the town of Freising in the Erdinger Moos wetlands, the airport serves not only the Bavarian capital but the entire Alpine region of southern Germany and Austrian Tyrol. The airport is operated by Flughafen München GmbH (FMG), a public company jointly owned by the Free State of Bavaria (51%), the Federal Republic of Germany (26%), and the City of Munich (23%).
Munich Airport serves as the primary hub for Lufthansa and a base for numerous Lufthansa Group subsidiaries including Discover Airlines, Eurowings, Condor, and Air Dolomiti. Its strategically designed Terminal 2, a joint venture with Lufthansa (40%) and the first airline-co-operated terminal in Germany, has been repeatedly honoured as the world's best airport terminal. The airport holds the rare distinction of being Germany's only certified Skytrax 5-Star Airport — a title retained consecutively since 2015 — and in 2025 ranked 9th globally and Best Airport in Central Europe at the Skytrax World Airport Awards. It also received the ATW Airport of the Year 2026 award.
In 2025, Munich Airport handled 43.4 million passengers — an increase of 1.8 million (+4.4%) over 2024's 41.6 million, making it the fastest-growing airport in the German-speaking region. Flight movements rose to 337,000 (+3%), with an average seat load factor of 80.9%. The airport served 232 destinations in 71 countries via 96 airlines. Long-haul traffic grew by a particularly strong 8.5%, with intercontinental routes to the United States and Asia leading growth. In cargo, the airport handled approximately 330,000 tonnes (+7.6% H1 2025 trend).
The airport opened on 17 May 1992, replacing the old Riem Airport within Munich city limits. Terminal 2 opened in June 2003, and the T2 Satellite was inaugurated in 2016, expanding T2's capacity to 36 million passengers per year. A transformative €700+ million expansion of Terminal 1 — featuring a brand-new non-Schengen pier spanning 95,000 m² and 360 metres in length — was inaugurated with a grand opening on 13 April 2025, adding capacity for up to 6 million additional passengers annually and becoming the new home for major long-haul carriers including American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, and Qatar Airways. Munich Airport is also celebrated for unique attractions: the Airbräu, opened in 1999, remains the world's only airport brewery, and the airport's Munich Airport Center (MAC) hosts Germany's largest covered beer garden, a climbing garden, and a winter Christmas market that draws visitors from across Bavaria.

Terminals & Gates
Terminal Overview
Munich Airport operates two main passenger terminals — Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2) — plus the T2 Satellite building and, as of April 2025, the entirely new Terminal 1 Pier. Between the two main terminals lies the Munich Airport Center (MAC), a large public plaza housing the central S-Bahn station, the world-famous Airbräu brewery, shops, restaurants, and services accessible to all visitors without a boarding pass. A free shuttle bus runs between T1 and T2 every 5–10 minutes (07:00–23:00), and both terminals are also linked by the S-Bahn stations at the MAC.
Terminal 1 (T1)
Terminal 1 is the older of the two terminals, opened with the airport on 17 May 1992. It is subdivided into five modules (A, B, C, D, E), each functioning as a largely self-contained unit with its own check-in and baggage reclaim areas. A sixth area, Module F (Hall F), is located north of the terminal and is dedicated to high-security flights, primarily to Israel, with strict additional security protocols. From April 2025, the new T1 Pier handles the majority of non-Schengen (long-haul international) traffic.

T1 hosts a diverse mix of carriers including low-cost airlines (Ryanair), charter operators, and non-Star Alliance international airlines. The terminal's main S-Bahn and MAC connection is via the central area Zone Z, which contains additional check-in counters and shopping.
Terminal 2 (T2) and T2 Satellite
Terminal 2 opened in June 2003 as a dedicated facility for Lufthansa and Star Alliance partners. It is operated by Terminal-2-Betriebsgesellschaft mbH & Co. oHG, a joint venture between FMG (60%) and Lufthansa (40%) — making it the first airline-co-operated terminal in Germany and a model globally replicated since. The T2 Satellite opened in April 2016, expanding capacity to 36 million passengers per year and adding 27 pierside stands with direct jet bridge access.
- T2 Main Building: Circular central plaza layout. Level 04 (Gates G) = Schengen departures; Level 05 (Gates H) = non-Schengen departures; Level 03 = bus gates. Central security renovated with new CT scanners in 2025 — in 90%+ of cases, wait time is under 10 minutes.
- T2 Satellite: Connected to T2 main via an underground People Transit System (PTS) — automated shuttle train running every 4 minutes (04:00–00:00). Gates J, K (Schengen) and L (non-Schengen). Hosts the prize-winning Food Hall and the Lufthansa First Class Lounge with outdoor terrace.

Skytrax recognition: T2 was rated the world's best airport terminal in 2017. Terminal 2's cleanliness has been rated "best standard in Europe" by Skytrax auditors. The airport overall holds a 5-Star Airport certification (Germany's only; one of three in Europe).

Terminal 2 / T2 Satellite — Lufthansa Lounges:
- Lufthansa First Class Lounge (T2 main, gates G21/H21): Renovated 2025. Exclusive a-la-carte dining, full bar, cigar lounge, Jacuzzi-equipped showers, day beds in quiet rooms. For Lufthansa/SWISS first class passengers and HON Circle members.

Terminal 1 — Independent Lounges:
- Emirates Lounge (T1 Module C, Level 05): For Emirates First/Business Class and Skywards Gold/Platinum members. Private seating, hot buffet, premium beverages, showers.

Inter-Terminal Connections
- T1 ↔ T2 (landside): Free shuttle bus every 5–10 minutes, 07:00–23:00. Journey ~5–7 minutes. Also reachable on foot via the MAC (~10 minutes walk).
- T2 main ↔ T2 Satellite (airside): Automated PTS shuttle every 4 minutes, 04:00–00:00. Journey ~2–3 minutes. No passport control required.

Transportation Guide
Getting from Munich Airport to the City Centre
Munich Airport is located approximately 28.5 km northeast of the city centre — one of the furthest airport-to-city distances of any major European hub. Despite this, the airport is well connected by S-Bahn suburban rail, express bus, and road. Journey times to central Munich typically range from 40 to 55 minutes by public transport or 35–55 minutes by taxi depending on traffic.
S-Bahn – Lines S1 and S8
The S-Bahn suburban rail is the backbone of airport-to-city transport. Lines S1 and S8 both serve the airport and both terminate at München Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) and Marienplatz, departing every 20 minutes each — combined, they give an effective 10-minute frequency. The two lines take slightly different routes around Munich: S8 passes through the eastern side (Ostbahnhof, 33 min), while S1 goes via the western route (Hauptbahnhof, 45 min). Both lines stop at the central S-Bahn station located in the Munich Airport Center (MAC) between Terminals 1 and 2, with an additional stop at the Visitors Park (Besucherpark).
- S8 journey time: Ostbahnhof 33 min; Marienplatz 38 min; Hauptbahnhof 41 min

- Important for S1: Some S1 trains split at Neufahrn station. When travelling to the airport, use only the rear carriages of the train
Lufthansa Express Bus
The Lufthansa Airport Express Bus connects Munich Airport to the city centre every 20 minutes, year-round (06:25–22:25). It makes two stops: Schwabing-Nord (Nordfriedhof) and München Hauptbahnhof (Central Station). Available to all passengers regardless of airline. The bus stops are directly in front of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 arrivals areas.

Regional Trains (ÜFEX / RE22)
The Airport Express (ÜFEX, RE22) is a Deutsche Bahn regional train running hourly from Munich Airport (Flughafen München station) to Regensburg via Freising and Landshut — ideal for passengers connecting to northern Bavaria. The Bayern-Ticket is valid. For direct connections to Munich main station, the S-Bahn or Lufthansa Bus remain the better options.
Taxi
Official taxis wait in designated ranks directly outside the arrivals areas of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Munich taxis are metered with no fixed airport flat rates.

- Typical fare, airport → city centre (Hauptbahnhof): €65–€80 depending on traffic and exact destination. Expect the higher range during rush hours.

- Journey time: 35–55 minutes depending on traffic (A92/A9 motorways). Rush hour can push this to 75+ minutes.
- During Oktoberfest (late September–early October), taxi demand surges dramatically — expect significant waits and surge pricing.
Ride-Hailing – Uber, Bolt, FREE NOW
Uber, Bolt, and the local app FREE NOW (formerly myTaxi) operate at Munich Airport. Note: in Germany, ride-hailing apps must use licensed taxi or rental car (Mietwagen) vehicles, and surge pricing applies during peak times. Typical fares to city centre: €55–€90. Pickup points are at designated areas near the terminal exits; follow in-app directions for the exact meeting point. Availability is lower than in other major European cities — allow extra time during peak periods.
Car Rental
All major car rental companies operate on-site with counters in the arrivals areas of both terminals: Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, and Thrifty. The airport connects directly to Autobahn A92 (eastward to Deggendorf and westward to Munich) and is signposted from the A9 (Munich–Nuremberg). Driving to Munich city centre takes 35–50 minutes via A92/A9/A8. Be aware that much of Munich city centre is within a restricted low-emission zone (Umweltzone) requiring a green environmental badge (Umweltplakette) — check your rental vehicle's badge before driving in.
Hotel Shuttles
The Hilton Munich Airport (the only hotel directly connected within the terminal campus) and the nearby Novotel München Airport and other hotels operate shuttles to the airport — typically at intervals of 20–30 minutes. Most hotels near the airport also provide bus transfers via the public MVV Bus 635 (Economy Parking shuttle). Confirm schedule at time of booking.

Sleep Facilities Inside the Airport
The Hilton Munich Airport is the primary sleeping option within the terminal area. Outside of the hotel, formal sleep rooms or pods are not available at MUC. However, the T2 Satellite has comfortable seating areas near gates K and L, and the MAC has some quieter zones. For overnight transits, the Hilton is by far the best option — request the executive lounge access for a more relaxed experience. The airport technically operates 24/7 but does not actively encourage sleeping in the terminals; security may make rounds overnight. Bring earplugs and a neck pillow for any terminal sleeping attempt.

Drop-Off / Kiss & Ride
Terminals 1 and 2 have designated Kiss & Ride zones: 5 minutes free for drop-off (departures side); 10 minutes free for pick-up (arrivals side). After the free period, standard parking rates apply. Do not use the Kiss & Ride zone for extended waits — use P20 or the nearby petrol station waiting areas instead.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout all terminals and public areas under the network name "MUC Free WiFi" or Telekom HotSpot. Connection requires a one-time registration via email or phone number. Speed is generally adequate for browsing and streaming. For heavy work use or VPN access, a local German SIM card or eSIM (e.g., Telekom, O2 Germany) is recommended. The Lufthansa Business and Senator Lounges offer faster, dedicated Wi-Fi for lounge guests.
The Airbräu — World's Only Airport Brewery
One of Munich Airport's most celebrated attractions is the Airbräu, opened in 1999 in the Munich Airport Center (MAC) between Terminals 1 and 2. The world's first — and still only — airport brewery produces beer on-site following the German Reinheitsgebot purity law of 1516. It also hosts Germany's largest covered beer garden (outdoors in summer) and won a FAB Award for gastronomy excellence in 2025. Signature beers include Flieger Hell, Aviator Dunkel, and seasonal specials. The Airbräu is accessible to all visitors without a boarding pass — a favourite meeting spot for employees, residents, and travellers alike. Open from morning until late evening.
Shopping
Munich Airport features extensive retail spread across Terminal 1, Terminal 2, the T2 Satellite's award-winning Food Hall, and the MAC. Highlights include a wide duty-free selection at Terminal 2 (fashion, cosmetics, spirits, electronics), luxury brand boutiques (Hugo Boss, Swarovski, Rolex), Bavarian specialty stores (Käfer Schmankerl, local crafts), and a bookshop and pharmacy in each terminal. The MAC's Christmas and Winter Market (mid-November to late December) transforms the public plaza into an award-winning festive market with 60+ stalls. VAT refunds (Global Blue) available at designated service desks for non-EU residents — process paperwork before check-in.
Dining
The airport's culinary offer is exceptional by airport standards. Highlights include the Michelin-starred Mountain Hub Gourmet at the Hilton Munich Airport — one of very few Michelin-starred restaurants in any airport worldwide. The Food Hall in the T2 Satellite won a FAB Award in 2025 for airport gastronomy. Café Aïda (also FAB Award 2025) offers Austrian-style café culture. Beyond the Airbräu brewery, dining options include Bavarian taverns, international cuisines, Starbucks, McDonald's, sushi bars, and grab-and-go options throughout all terminals. Price range: €4–€8 for café/bakery items; €15–€30 for a full restaurant meal. 24-hour vending and some late-night kiosks are available near gate areas.
Medical Services
A dedicated medical centre (Arztpraxis/First Aid) is located in the MAC public area. Pharmacies (Apotheke) operate in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 during regular hours (approximately 07:00–21:00). For emergencies, the airport has direct access to emergency services via standard German emergency number 112. The nearest major hospital is the Klinikum Freising (approximately 10 km from the airport).
Family Facilities
Family check-in lanes and priority security access are available in both terminals. Dedicated play areas for children are located in the MAC public zone, the T2 airside area, and near the Airbräu (outdoor adventure playground in summer). Baby care and nursing rooms are in both terminals. Children under 15 travel for free on S-Bahn with a paying adult using the Airport City Day Ticket group option.
Accessibility (PRM Services)
Munich Airport is fully accessible. Passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) should notify their airline at least 48 hours before travel. Accessible toilets, lifts, and dedicated lanes at all security checkpoints are available. Wheelchair assistance can be arranged through your airline or on arrival at the information desks. Accessible parking spaces are available in all car parks with a 50% discount for holders of a German disability badge with markers "aG", "BI", or "H".
Currency Exchange & ATMs
Currency exchange bureaux (Interchange, Eurochange) are located in arrivals and departures at both terminals. As in most European airports, ATM rates are significantly better than bureau exchange rates. ATMs from Deutsche Bank, Sparkasse, and international networks (Visa/Mastercard) are available in both terminals and the MAC. The MVV ticket machines in the S-Bahn station accept most international debit/credit cards for contactless payment.
Luggage Storage
Left-luggage facilities (Gepäckaufbewahrung) are operated by various providers near the arrivals areas of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Rates typically start from €5–€7 per item for the first 24 hours. Self-service luggage lockers are also available in the MAC. The S-Bahn trains have luggage space between seats and near doors — suitable for large suitcases.
Smoking
Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is strictly prohibited inside all terminal buildings and the MAC. Designated outdoor smoking areas are located immediately outside the entrance/exit zones of each terminal. In airside areas, smoking is not permitted. Plan to smoke before entering the security zone.
Prayer Rooms & Chapel
An interfaith prayer and quiet room is available in the MAC. A chapel with regular services is accessible to landside visitors. Information desk staff can direct you to specific prayer facilities in each terminal.
Showers
Showers are available for all passengers in the Lufthansa Business and Senator Lounges (T2 and T2 Satellite) for eligible passengers and Priority Pass holders. The Hilton Executive Lounge (€50 day pass) also provides shower access.
