Airport Overview

São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport (IATA: GRU, ICAO: SBGR), popularly known as GRU Airport or Cumbica Airport after the district in which it sits, is the largest airport in Brazil and Latin America, and one of the 50 busiest in the world by passenger traffic. Located 25 kilometres (16 miles) northeast of downtown São Paulo in the municipality of Guarulhos, the airport serves as the primary international gateway for both São Paulo — Brazil's 22-million-strong economic capital — and the entire South American continent. The official name honours André Franco Montoro (1916–1999), former Governor of São Paulo state; the renaming took effect on 28 November 2001, though locals still commonly refer to it as Guarulhos or Cumbica. The airport was rebranded as GRU Airport in 2012 following a 20-year concession awarded to the Invepar–ACSA consortium.

GRU is the primary hub for LATAM Brasil (oneworld) and Gol Linhas Aéreas (SkyTeam associate), together commanding the vast majority of capacity. Azul Brazilian Airlines exclusively occupies Terminal 1 for domestic operations and serves as a focus carrier. In 2025, the airport set an all-time traffic record of 47.2 million passengers — up 8.3% from the prior year's record of 43.6 million — reclaiming its title as Latin America's busiest airport, surpassing Bogotá (45.5M) and Mexico City (43.6M). International traffic alone reached a record 16.8 million, fuelled by new routes to Doha, Los Angeles, and Johannesburg and Brazil's expanded e-visa programme. In 2024, the airport was named one of the best airports in the world by AirHelp and ranked second among the most punctual large airports globally by Cirium Aviation.

The airport's origins trace to a military air base; commercial aviation took root in the 1960s when the Brazilian government initiated studies on expanding infrastructure. The first passenger terminals opened in 1985 (Terminal 1 and 2), with the modern Terminal 3 inaugurated in 2012 specifically to handle long-haul and intercontinental traffic. GRU achieved a historic milestone on 31 March 2018 when CPTM Line 13-Jade began operations, making it the first major South American airport hub to have a direct railway connection — ahead of Buenos Aires-Ezeiza, Santiago, Lima, Bogotá, and Rio de Janeiro-Galeão. A massive $490 million (R$2.55 billion) expansion programme is underway, centred on a new 33,000 m² pier for Terminal 3 with 14 wide-body gates, set to add approximately 11 million passengers of annual capacity by late 2026.

What makes GRU truly exceptional is its dual role as a continental gateway and a transatlantic bridge. The airport handles approximately 900 daily flights and 100,000+ daily passengers across 100+ destinations in 30+ countries. It is A380-capable, with infrastructure to accommodate the world's largest commercial aircraft. Its cargo facilities — covering nearly 100,000 m² with advanced automated systems — make it one of the most important air freight hubs in South America. Despite persistent challenges with congestion, immigration queues, and signage confusing for first-time visitors, GRU's strategic position at the crossroads of the Americas ensures its indispensable role in global aviation.

Terminals & Gates

Overview: Three Terminals, One Complex

GRU's three terminals are distributed along a single airport road. Terminals 2 and 3 are directly connected by an internal walkway (10–15 minutes on foot). Terminal 1 is located separately, near the CPTM train station, and requires a free shuttle bus (approximately 14 minutes). The free inter-terminal shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes from 04:00 to midnight; between midnight and 04:00 it does not operate — use Uber or a Guarucoop taxi during those hours. A new Aeromóvel automated people mover began limited service in 2025/2026 to connect all terminals with the train station.

Terminal 1 (T1) — Azul Domestic Hub

Terminal 1 is the smallest and most isolated of the three. It functions exclusively as the base for Azul Brazilian Airlines domestic operations. With only 9 departure gates, the terminal has a compact, bus-station-like feel that experienced travellers often describe as basic but easy to navigate. It is closest to the CPTM Line 13 train station, making it the most convenient terminal for passengers arriving by public transport — though the walk from the train platform still requires the shuttle bus.

  • Airlines: Azul Brazilian Airlines (domestic only)
  • Gates: 9 departure gates
  • Lounge: W Lounge (24/7, airside domestic, 2nd floor; capacity 36 guests; fills quickly during peaks)
  • Dining: Heineken Bar, Subway, Casa do Pão de Queijo, Sushi Station, Rei do Mate, Nutty Bavarian — all on the Boarding Floor
  • Note: If arriving by CPTM train and flying from T2 or T3, take the free shuttle from T1

Terminal 2 (T2) — Main Domestic and Latin America Hub

Terminal 2 is the largest and oldest passenger terminal, handling the bulk of domestic traffic as well as Latin American and some international flights. It is split into two distinct wings: the West Pier (domestic only, gates 201–229, 16 gates) and the East Pier (domestic + international, gates 238–272, 13 gates). The terminal is notoriously congested, and travellers regularly report confusing signage, inadequate air conditioning in boarding areas, and long immigration queues. Wing E restrooms are generally better maintained than those near Gate 251.

  • Airlines: Gol Linhas Aéreas (main domestic hub), LATAM Brasil (domestic), Aerolíneas Argentinas, Avianca Colombia, Copa Airlines, American Airlines (domestic arrivals), and most Latin American carriers
  • Check-in halls: B, C, D, E
  • Gates: 201–229 (West/Domestic), 238–272 (East/Domestic + International)
  • Hotels in-terminal: Fast Sleep by Slaviero (52 rooms + 13 suites, public area, T2 Arrival East — accessible to all passengers; hourly rates from R$94)
  • Sleep pods: Zzzleepandgo soundproof pods available airside near Gates 201–223 (R$9/hour equivalent)
  • Lounges (11 total in T2): GOL Domestic Premium Lounge, GOL International Premium Lounge (24h), Plaza Premium (landside and airside — landside allows exit/re-entry), W Premium Lounge The West (airside, domestic), Urban Cowork Airport (near Check-in E, 24h — workspaces, showers, lockers; R$145/3h, R$210/6h, R$320/12h; accepts Priority Pass/Lounge Key), Advantage VIP Lounge (24h; R$180 walk-in; accepts Priority Pass), Bradesco Cartões Lounge, American Airlines Admirals Club (Wing D Mezzanine, 07:00–23:00; US$59 walk-in), Ambaar Lounge (landside, 08:00–20:00), Villa GRU Lounge (landside, 08:00–20:00; accepts Priority Pass)
  • Facilities: Banco do Brasil branch (business hours); 24h Banco24Horas ATMs; Malex luggage storage (West Arrivals, 24h; R$31–38/hour, R$79–107/day); Correios post office (Check-in B, Mon–Fri 09:00–17:00); Bleriot Bar & Lounge (24h)

Terminal 3 (T3) — International and Long-Haul Hub

Terminal 3 is the newest and most modern facility, opened in 2012 and purpose-built for long-haul and intercontinental flights. It is the primary gateway for passengers travelling to North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. T3 is connected to T2 via an internal walkway and features wider corridors, better signage, and more comfortable resting areas — including carpeted quiet zones appreciated by layover passengers. A major expansion (new 33,000 m² pier with 14 wide-body gates) is under construction and expected to open in late 2026, adding approximately 11 million passengers of annual capacity. In December 2024, a new BTG Pactual Bank VIP Terminal opened within T3, offering exclusive access for pre-booked users.

  • Airlines: LATAM Brasil (main international hub; operates the flagship LATAM VIP Lounge), Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Air Canada, TAP Air Portugal, Iberia, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Korean Air, and all other intercontinental carriers
  • Gates: 22 international gates (expansion will add 14 more)
  • Hotel in-terminal: TRYP by Wyndham São Paulo Guarulhos Airport (80 rooms, airside transit zone Level 1, international side — requires international boarding pass to access; hourly rates available; 24h reception; gourmet restaurant; outdoor smoking deck)
  • Lounges (10 total in T3): LATAM VIP Lounge (Mezzanine, 05:00–midnight; ~20,000 sq ft, 30-metre buffet, showers, conference rooms — LATAM Business and partner airlines), Espaço Banco Safra (Mezzanine above Duty-Free, 07:00–03:00; contract lounge for Emirates, Lufthansa, KLM, and others; Priority Pass accepted), Star Alliance Lounge (Mezzanine; for Star Alliance Gold members and Business Class), American Airlines Admirals Club (Mezzanine, 13:00–midnight), W Premium Lounge The Pier (24h; open to all with Priority Pass or walk-in purchase; connected to Air France La Première exclusive section upstairs), 5th Avenue Lounge (24h; opened July 2024; exclusive to American Express cardholders — replaced former Centurion Lounge), Mastercard Black Lounge (Mezzanine, 06:00–23:30), Bradesco Lounge
  • Facilities: Malex luggage storage (Arrivals, limited hours); medical centre (T3 Departures); Oriental massage clinic (late morning–late evening); quieter carpeted rest zones
  • International transit zone: T3 has a dedicated international transit area. If both flights are international, under the same reservation, and you do not intend to enter Brazil, you may remain in this zone and your checked luggage will be transferred automatically.

Transportation Guide

Getting to and from GRU Airport

São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport sits 25 km northeast of downtown São Paulo, separated from the city by expressways and the infamously congested Bandeirantes and Dutra highways. Traffic conditions can drastically affect journey times — what takes 30 minutes at 6 am can take 90 minutes at rush hour (07:00–09:30 and 17:00–20:00). The airport is served by train, express bus, city buses, taxi, and ride-hailing apps. The currency is the Brazilian Real (BRL); R$1 ≈ US$0.18 / €0.16 as of early 2025.

Train — CPTM Line 13-Jade (Airport Train)

GRU became the first major South American airport with a direct rail link when CPTM Line 13-Jade opened on 31 March 2018. The line's terminal station — Aeroporto-Guarulhos CPTM — is located near Terminal 1 and the parking area, approximately a 10-minute free shuttle bus ride from Terminals 2 and 3. Two train services operate:

  • Airport Express (Expresso Aeroporto) — Direct express from Aeroporto-Guarulhos to Luz station (downtown São Paulo), no intermediate stops. Journey: ~35 minutes by train + ~10 minutes shuttle from T2/T3. Fare: R$10.00 one way (separate ticket, purchased at the Airport Express office, cash only). Runs Monday–Friday only, with limited departures approximately every 2 hours.
  • Regular CPTM Line 13 — Commuter train running every ~30 minutes (04:00–midnight) between Aeroporto-Guarulhos and Engenheiro Goulart station, where you transfer to Line 12 (Safira) toward Brás, Tatuapé, and connections to metro lines 3 (Red) and 10 (Turquoise). Total journey to city centre: ~45–55 minutes. Fare: R$5.00 (integrated metro/train ticket, valid for all connections within 3 hours).

Note on the Aeromóvel People Mover: An automated elevated people mover (Aeromóvel) connecting the CPTM station directly to all three terminals began limited operations in 2025/2026, aimed at eliminating the shuttle bus dependency. Check current operational status at gru.com.br before travel.

Airport Bus Service (ABS)

The Airport Bus Service (airportbusservice.com.br) operates air-conditioned executive coach routes between GRU and key São Paulo destinations. Services stop at Terminals 2 and 3 (T1 passengers use the free terminal shuttle). Tickets can be bought at kiosks near the arrivals exits or online.

  • Route to Praça da República / Avenida Paulista / Tietê Bus Terminal: Several daily departures; approximately 55–70 minutes depending on traffic. Fare: approximately R$60–R$85 one way.
  • Route to Congonhas Airport (CGH): Runs multiple times daily; journey ~60–90 min. Fare: approximately R$40–R$55.
  • Hotel Circuit: Serves major hotels in the Jardins, Itaim Bibi, and Vila Olímpia districts.
  • EMTU State Buses (lines 257, 538): More economical but slower option connecting to metro stations like Tatuapé (Line 3 – Red). Fare: approximately R$10–R$15.

Taxi (Guarucoop)

Guarucoop is the exclusive licensed taxi operator authorised to pick up passengers at GRU Airport. Taxis are clearly identifiable — white vehicles with two blue stripes. All fares are based on fixed zone rates set by the Municipality of Guarulhos, making metering disputes non-existent. Guarucoop desks are located inside arrivals halls of all three terminals. Advance booking available via the Guarucoop app or WhatsApp at +55 (11) 2440-7070.

  • Fare to Avenida Paulista / city centre: Approximately R$130–R$180 (≈US$23–32), fixed zones
  • Fare to Congonhas Airport (CGH): Approximately R$120–R$160
  • Journey time: 30–60 minutes depending on traffic
  • Payment: Credit/debit card accepted at desk prepayment; confirm before boarding
  • Note: Street taxis can also be found outside arrivals but without fixed rates — agree on a price or insist on the meter beforehand

Ride-Hailing: Uber and 99

Both Uber and 99 (Brazil's main local ride-hailing platform) operate at GRU. Pickup zones are located outside the arrivals level at each terminal — follow signs or in-app instructions. Prices are generally slightly lower than Guarucoop taxis but subject to surge pricing during peak hours and bad weather.

  • Uber / 99 fare to city centre: Approximately R$80–R$200 depending on traffic, time of day, and service tier (UberX, Comfort, Black)
  • Payment: Cashless via app
  • Pickup: Uber and 99 totems/pickup signs are positioned outside arrivals at T1 (near Check-in A), T2 (near Check-in C and D), and T3 (near Check-in H)

Car Rental

Car rental desks are located in the arrivals areas of all three terminals. Major operators include Localiza, Movida, Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, and Unidas. For the best rates, book in advance online. GRU is linked to São Paulo via Rodovia Hélio Smidt and the Bandeirantes (SP-348) and Dutra (BR-116) highways — have a GPS or Waze ready, as navigation can be challenging. EV rental is increasingly available through Localiza and Movida.

Inter-Airport Transfer (GRU ↔ Congonhas/CGH)

São Paulo has two airports: GRU (international + domestic) and Congonhas/CGH (primarily domestic, in the city). If connecting between them, the Airport Bus Service is the most cost-effective option (~R$40–55, ~60–90 min). Uber/99 costs approximately R$80–130. Historically, LATAM and Gol offered free buses for their passengers — these were cancelled during COVID and as of 2024–2025 have not been reinstated. Always allow at least 3 hours for an inter-airport connection.

Transport Time to City Centre Price (approx.) Frequency Hours
CPTM Line 13 + transfers 45–55 min R$5.00 (~US$0.90) Every 30 min 04:00–midnight
Airport Express (Expresso Aeroporto) 35 min (+ shuttle) R$10.00 (~US$1.80) ~Every 2 hrs Mon–Fri only

Hotels Near the Airport

Hotels Inside the Airport Terminals

TRYP by Wyndham São Paulo Guarulhos Airport ★★★★ — The only hotel in the Southern Hemisphere located in the airside restricted area of an airport terminal. Situated inside Terminal 3's international transit zone, Level 1, it offers 80 stylish rooms with free WiFi, 24/7 reception, a gourmet restaurant, lobby bar, and a unique outdoor smoking deck. Access requires a valid international boarding pass or proof of an international connection — passengers who have not yet checked in, or who have large checked baggage with airline check-in not yet open (typically more than 6 hours before the flight), cannot access the hotel. Hourly room hire is available; enquire at the front desk. Family rooms and "Fitness" rooms with exercise bikes also available. Price range: from approximately R$450–R$900/night (≈US$80–160). Ideal for international transit passengers, layovers, and early morning departures.

Slaviero Fast Sleep Guarulhos (Cabins + Suites) ★★★ — Two options within Terminal 2: compact sleep cabins with bunk beds (Public Area / National Wing, ground floor near Arrivals) and suites (West Arrivals area). All units include bathroom, TV, A/C, electrical outlets, and free WiFi. Available by the hour or for multi-hour blocks. Accessible to all passengers — no boarding pass required. Rates start at R$94 (+4% tax) per hour for cabins, with multi-hour packages. Acoustic insulation is poor; noise from the terminal hall is audible. During high season, sells out quickly — book in advance. Ideal for budget-conscious travellers needing a short rest.

Hotels Adjacent to the Airport (Free Shuttle)

Pullman São Paulo Guarulhos Airport ★★★★★ — Ranked the #1 hotel in Guarulhos by Tripadvisor reviewers and the top luxury airport hotel option. The property offers 377 rooms, a spa and fitness centre, outdoor pool, the BASE restaurant (highly rated for its churrasco and buffet), a gamer room, adventure park for families, and pet-friendly policies. Despite the 5-star designation, prices are reasonable for the quality offered. Price range: from approximately US$120–R$850/night (≈US$150+). Ideal for families, couples, and business travellers seeking genuine 5-star comfort near the airport.

Budget and Transit Options

For ultra-budget travellers, several guesthouses and pousadas operate near the airport district, typically in the R$80–R$150/night range. These generally do not offer airport shuttles. Uber or 99 from the airport to these properties typically costs R$25–R$50. For truly minimal budgets — or if only a few hours' rest is needed — the Slaviero Fast Sleep cabins in T2 remain the best on-site option.

Parking Options & Rates

Parking at GRU Airport

GRU Airport offers on-site parking across three categories: Premium (Garage Building / Edifício Garagem), Standard (open-air), and Flex. Total capacity is approximately 7,500 vehicles across all areas. All parking lots include theft and fire insurance, 24/7 security, a computerised management system, and reserved spaces for passengers with reduced mobility, pregnant women, and seniors. Payment accepted via cash (Brazilian Reais only for cash), Sem Parar, Connect Car, Veloe, Taggy, credit/debit card, and QR code mobile payment via the parking ticket. Bookings can be made in advance on the official GRU website (gru.com.br) for guaranteed spaces and potentially better rates.

Parking Categories

Premium / Garage Building (Edifício Garagem): Covered multi-storey car park with direct access to Terminals 2 and 3 — the most convenient option for these terminals. Valet service (ValetXpress) is available at Terminal 3 for an additional fee. Ideal for short and medium stays where proximity matters. This is the most expensive option.

Standard (Open-Air): Uncovered surface car parks available near Terminals 1 and 2. The most economical option for long stays. Walking distance to terminals varies but is generally 5–15 minutes. Shuttle buses serve parking areas farther from the terminals.

Flex: A hybrid option offering spaces within the Garage Building area and near Terminal 3, designed for longer stays at a mid-range price point.

Parking Type Location Coverage Hourly Daily Max Best For
Premium (Garage Building) T2/T3 direct access Covered Higher rate ~R$120–R$180 Short stays, convenience
Standard Near T1/T2 Open-air Lower rate ~R$60–R$90 Long stays, economy
Flex Garage Building / T3 area Covered Mid rate ~R$80–R$120 Multi-day stays
Valet (ValetXpress at T3) Terminal 3 Covered Premium Higher Premium convenience

Note: Official parking rates at GRU are subject to frequent change. Always check the current tariff table on gru.com.br before your trip. Online pre-booking on the official GRU website (marked as "EDG – Reserva On-line") is available exclusively for the Garage Building and may offer better rates. For multi-week trips, private off-airport parking companies located 3–5 minutes from the airport (accessible via shuttle) often offer significantly cheaper rates — search for "Airport Park Guarulhos" or similar operators.

Drop-Off / Kiss & Go: Short-term drop-off areas are available outside the arrivals halls of each terminal for brief stops. Extended curbside parking is strictly prohibited and may result in fines or vehicle removal.

Services & Facilities

WiFi

Free WiFi is available throughout all three terminals under the network name ".GRU WIFI". The service works in two renewable sessions of 2 hours each (total 4 hours free), requiring a phone number or email address for registration. After the free sessions expire, paid packages with higher speeds are available for purchase. Users report that the free WiFi is generally adequate for browsing and messaging but can be slow during peak daytime hours, particularly in T2. Strategy: download important documents, boarding passes, and maps before your free session expires.

Lounges

GRU has 22 VIP lounges across its three terminals — one of the largest lounge ecosystems in South America. Terminal 3 has 10 lounges focused on international travellers; Terminal 2 has 11 covering domestic and international flights; Terminal 1 has the single W Lounge for Azul passengers. The flagship is the LATAM VIP Lounge in T3 (approximately 20,000 sq ft, 30-metre buffet, showers). For travellers without airline lounge access, the most accessible pay-at-door and Priority Pass options are: Espaço Banco Safra (T3, 07:00–03:00, Priority Pass), Urban Cowork Airport (T2, 24h, from R$145 for 3 hours, Priority Pass/Lounge Key), and Advantage VIP (T2, 24h, R$180, Priority Pass). W Lounges are available in all terminals and accessible via lounge passes or Priority Pass.

Shopping

GRU hosts 300+ retail and dining outlets across all terminals, with 54 new openings added in December 2024 alone. Duty-free is primarily concentrated in T3's international airside areas (Duty Free Dufry is the main operator). Brazilian product highlights include cachaça and premium rum, coffee, Havaianas sandals (a must-buy), local chocolate brands (Cacau Show), leather goods, and gemstone jewellery. T3 features the widest luxury brand selection. Landside shopping in all terminals includes pharmacies, newsstands, souvenir shops, and the popular Casa do Pão de Queijo chain for the iconic Brazilian cheese bread.

Dining

All three terminals have extensive food options both landside and airside, with T3 offering the widest selection and best quality:

  • 24-hour food options: Bleriot Bar & Lounge (T2 airside, the only 24/7 bar), W Lounge catering (all terminals), GOL International Premium Lounge (T2), vending machines in all terminals
  • Brazilian specialties: Casa do Pão de Queijo (all terminals), Bob's (Brazilian burger chain), Viena (churrascaria)
  • International chains: McDonald's, Burger King, Subway, Starbucks (T3)
  • Price range: Snacks R$15–R$35; full meals R$40–R$90; fine dining at W Lounge or TRYP restaurant from R$80+

Medical Services

Medical offices are located landside in Terminals 1 and 2, providing basic medical assistance. Pharmacies (farmácias) are located in T1 Arrivals, T2 Departures (west side), and T2 Arrivals (east side). For emergencies, dial 192 (SAMU ambulance) or 190 (police). Airport security and information staff can summon medical assistance.

Family Facilities

Baby-changing facilities are located in numerous washrooms throughout all three terminals. A dedicated children's area is available in T3. The LATAM VIP Lounge and GOL Premium International Lounge (T2) also have children's areas. All terminal levels have ramps and lifts for pushchair access. The Lounge São Paulo (T2 & T3) has a cinema area and entertainment zones for older children; children under 12 enter free with a paying adult.

Accessibility

GRU provides wheelchair assistance and moving walkways throughout all terminals. Dedicated lanes exist at check-in, security, and immigration for passengers with reduced mobility. Request assistance through your airline at least 48 hours before travel. All major lounges provide accessible facilities. Reserved parking spaces are available in all car parks.

Currency Exchange and ATMs

Currency exchange offices (operated by Banco Safra) are located in all terminals but offer poor exchange rates — significantly worse than market rates. ATMs (caixas eletrônicos) of multiple banks are available 24 hours in all terminals. Bradesco ATMs do not charge withdrawal fees for most foreign cards; other ATMs (Itaú, Banco do Brasil, Banco24Horas) typically charge approximately R$25 per withdrawal. Using your bank card at a Bradesco ATM and selecting the local currency (BRL) is consistently the best way to access cash in Brazil.

Luggage Storage

Malex is the official luggage storage provider at GRU. Main location: T2 Arrivals West (24 hours). Secondary location: T3 Arrivals (limited hours). Rates: R$31–R$38 per hour and R$79–R$107 per day depending on bag size and location. For items lost within the airport, contact the Lost and Found office in T3 Departures or email [email protected].

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited throughout all airport facilities with one exception: the TRYP by Wyndham Hotel in T3 has an outdoor smoking deck, accessible to hotel guests and non-guests who pay an access fee (approximately US$37). All other terminal areas — including all lounges — are strictly non-smoking.

Chapel and Prayer Room

An ecumenical chapel/prayer space is located in the public area between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Service hours: 07:00–midnight daily. Advance booking is required — contact +55 (11) 2445-3720.

Post Office

A Correios (Brazilian Post) branch is located in Terminal 2, near Check-in B (Mezzanine level). Open Monday–Friday 09:00–17:00. Useful for posting souvenirs or documents.

Passenger Statistics

Traffic Growth and Records

GRU Airport has experienced remarkable growth, recovering strongly from the COVID-19 collapse and setting successive passenger records. The airport reclaimed its title as Latin America's busiest airport in 2025, having briefly been overtaken by Bogotá's El Dorado in 2024. International traffic reached an all-time high of 16.8 million passengers in 2025, driven by expanded US, European, Middle Eastern, and African connectivity, as well as Brazil's e-visa programme that opened access for citizens of over 90 countries.

Year Total Passengers YoY Change Notes
2019 43.0 million Pre-pandemic record
2020 ~10.5 million –76% COVID-19 collapse
2021 ~20.0 million +90% Domestic recovery
2022 ~37.0 million +85% International rebound
2023 ~40.2 million +9% Near pre-pandemic levels
2024 43.6 million +8.5% New all-time record; surpassed 2019
2025 47.2 million +8.3% New all-time record; reclaimed #1 in Latin America

In December 2024 alone, the airport processed 3.9 million passengers with approximately 22,300 aircraft movements — an increase of 8% year-on-year for that month. July consistently ranks as the busiest month, with monthly traffic exceeding 4.4 million passengers in July 2025 (the highest single month on record). The airport handles approximately 900 daily flights across all three terminals. Cargo volume is approximately 500,000+ tonnes annually, making GRU one of the most significant air freight hubs in South America.

The airport ranked 2nd globally among the most punctual large airports in 2024 (Cirium Aviation survey) and was named one of the best airports in the world by AirHelp in 2024. A $490 million expansion programme targeting 11 million additional annual passenger capacity is set for completion by late 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cheapest option is the CPTM Line 13-Jade train (R$5.00), departing from the Aeroporto-Guarulhos station near Terminal 1 — take the free terminal shuttle bus from T2 or T3 to the station (10 min). Change at Engenheiro Goulart to Line 12, then connect to the metro. Total journey ~45–55 minutes. The Airport Express train (R$10) is faster (~35 min to Luz station) but runs Mon–Fri only with limited schedule. For comfort, Uber/99 costs R$80–R$200 and takes 30–75 minutes depending on traffic. Official Guarucoop taxis charge fixed zone fares around R$130–R$180.
Terminal 1 is exclusively for Azul domestic flights. Terminal 2 handles most domestic flights (LATAM and Gol) plus Latin American routes — it has two wings (West: domestic only; East: domestic + some international). Terminal 3 is for nearly all long-haul international flights — Europe, North America, Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Always check your boarding pass or airline website to confirm your terminal before heading to the airport, as Terminals 2 and 3 have different security and boarding areas.
Yes. Connect to the network '.GRU WIFI' — registration with a phone number or email is required. The free service provides two sessions of 2 hours each (4 hours total). After that, paid packages at faster speeds are available. Speed is adequate for messaging and light browsing but can be slow during peak hours. Download boarding passes, maps, and offline content before your free session expires.
For international flights: arrive at least 3–4 hours before departure. Immigration queues at GRU can take 30–90 minutes, security adds another 20–40 minutes during peaks, and long walks between check-in and gates (especially in Terminal 2) add further time. For domestic flights: 2–3 hours is recommended, especially for T2 which is the most congested terminal. If connecting between T1 and T2 or T3, add at least 30 extra minutes for the shuttle transfer.
Yes. GRU operates 24/7 and overnight stays are generally permitted. For in-terminal sleeping, the TRYP by Wyndham (T3 airside, requires international boarding pass) offers hotel rooms with hourly rates. Slaviero Fast Sleep (T2, public area) provides sleep cabins from R$94/hour — accessible to all passengers without a boarding pass. Several lounges with Priority Pass access (Espaço Banco Safra, Urban Cowork) operate 24/7. For free options, Terminal 3 has quieter carpeted zones. Note: the free inter-terminal shuttle does not run midnight–04:00; use Uber during that window.
Malex is the official luggage storage operator. The main location is in Terminal 2 Arrivals West, open 24 hours. There is a secondary location in Terminal 3 Arrivals with limited hours. Rates are R$31–R$38 per hour or R$79–R$107 per day depending on bag size. If you lost an item at the airport (not on a plane), contact the Lost & Found in Terminal 3 Departures or email [email protected].
Yes. GRU has 22 lounges and several are open to any passenger with payment or a lounge membership (Priority Pass, Lounge Key). Best options: Espaço Banco Safra (T3 Mezzanine above Duty-Free, 07:00–03:00, Priority Pass accepted), Urban Cowork Airport (T2 near Check-in E, 24h, from R$145 for 3 hours, Priority Pass), Advantage VIP (T2, 24h, R$180 walk-in, Priority Pass), and W Lounges in all terminals (via lounge pass purchase starting from ~$40 USD). The 5th Avenue Lounge in T3 is exclusive to American Express cardholders.
Bleriot Bar & Lounge (T2 airside) is the only dedicated 24-hour bar-restaurant. The GOL International Premium Lounge (T2) operates 24 hours for eligible passengers. W Lounges in all terminals also run 24/7. Vending machines are available throughout all terminals overnight. The TRYP hotel restaurant in T3 (06:00–21:30) and most terminal food outlets close late at night. For early morning departures, arrive early enough to use the landside food courts which open from around 05:00.
Avoid currency exchange offices at the airport — Banco Safra operates all exchange desks and rates are significantly worse than market rates. The best approach is to use a Bradesco ATM (Banco24Horas network), which typically does not charge withdrawal fees for foreign cards. Always select to be charged in Brazilian Reais (BRL) — never accept 'Dynamic Currency Conversion' which adds 3–7% in hidden fees. Itaú and other ATMs charge approximately R$25 per transaction. Multiple ATMs are available 24 hours in all three terminals.
Yes — two accommodation options are inside the terminals. The TRYP by Wyndham (80 rooms, T3 international transit area Level 1, airside) requires a valid international boarding pass to access. Slaviero Fast Sleep (T2 public area) offers hourly sleep cabins and suites accessible to all passengers without a boarding pass, starting from R$94/hour. Both sell out quickly during high season — book in advance. For those flying domestically or without airside access, nearby hotels including the 5-star Pullman São Paulo Guarulhos Airport offer free shuttles.
Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 are connected by an internal walkway — the walk takes 10–15 minutes on foot (follow corridor signs). Terminal 1 has no direct walkway connection; use the free airport shuttle bus (every 15 minutes, 04:00–midnight; ~14 minutes journey). Between midnight and 04:00, the free shuttle does not operate — use Uber or a Guarucoop taxi instead. The new Aeromóvel automated people mover (launched 2025/2026) is being progressively extended to connect the CPTM station to all terminals — check current operational status on gru.com.br.
Smoking is prohibited inside all terminal buildings and all lounge facilities at GRU Airport. The only designated smoking area at the entire airport is the outdoor deck of the TRYP by Wyndham hotel in Terminal 3's international transit zone. Non-guests can access the outdoor smoking area by paying an access fee at the TRYP front desk (approximately US$37). There are no other smoking zones — not in landside areas, not in T1 or T2.

Pro Tips for Sao Paulo Guarulhos Airport

At The Airport:
  • The Terminal 3 international departure zone has multiple quiet carpeted rest areas that most travellers walk straight past on the way to the gates. These spots are significantly calmer than T2's crowded food court areas — ideal for a layover rest without paying lounge prices. The Espaço Banco Safra lounge in T3 (Mezzanine, above Duty-Free) accepts Priority Pass and is generally less crowded than its equivalents in T2.
  • In Terminal 2, restrooms near Gate 251 regularly receive poor cleanliness reviews from passengers. Head to Wing E restrooms instead — these are consistently cited as better maintained. Also note that T2's signage is notoriously confusing; if in doubt, ask airport staff rather than following signs, as several first-time visitors report walking in circles for 20+ minutes.
  • Bradesco ATMs at GRU don't charge a withdrawal fee for most foreign cards — a significant saving over the R$25 fee charged by other ATMs. The Banco Safra currency exchange counters offer terrible rates; avoid them entirely. If you need BRL, a Bradesco ATM is always the right choice.
  • If you're connecting at GRU from an international flight to a domestic one, budget 105 minutes minimum — not 45 as some travel sites suggest. The process includes: disembarking and walking to immigration (T3), queuing for immigration (30–90 min in peak periods), collecting baggage, clearing customs, walking/shuttling to T2, re-checking bags, and clearing domestic security. Missing this connection is one of the most common complaints from passengers transiting GRU.
Before You Fly:
  • Confirm your terminal before leaving for the airport — it's easy to assume GRU is one big building. Azul = T1 (near the train station). Domestic Gol and LATAM = T2. International long-haul = T3. Getting this wrong can cost you an extra 30–45 minutes for the shuttle transfer plus re-queuing at security.
  • Download Uber or 99 before you land and have your destination pre-entered. GRU's ground transport area is chaotic upon arrival, and having a confirmed pickup with a fixed price prevents you from being targeted by unofficial 'taxi touts' who approach passengers in the arrivals hall. The 99 app often has lower surge pricing than Uber during peak times.
  • If flying internationally out of T3, use the T3 international transit zone's dedicated immigration and security lanes — they're separate from T2's chaotic queues and generally faster. However, during peak South American summer (December–January) and Carnival season (February), even T3 can have 45–60 minute immigration waits. Fast Track is not widely available at GRU, so your only option is arriving early.
  • Book the Slaviero Fast Sleep or TRYP by Wyndham well in advance if you have a long layover — both sell out regularly during Brazilian holidays and summer. The TRYP requires an international boarding pass at check-in; don't book it if you have large checked bags and your airline check-in doesn't open for 6+ more hours, as you won't be able to access the airside hotel.
Common Mistakes:
  • Taking a Guarucoop taxi to an address in the Jardins or Itaim Bibi neighbourhood without checking the zone: Guarucoop uses a fixed zone pricing table, not a meter. The zone you're going to determines the price — confirm at the desk before your driver starts, or use the Guarucoop app to see the exact fare. Unregistered touts inside the arrivals hall (often wearing similar white shirts) are NOT Guarucoop — only go to the official desk or the taxi queue outside.
  • Assuming the free terminal shuttle runs all night: The inter-terminal shuttle between T1 and T2/T3 does NOT operate from midnight to 04:00. If you land on a late-night international flight and need to connect to T1 (for a first flight with Azul), you must take an Uber or Guarucoop taxi between terminals during those hours. Plan your connection or hotel booking accordingly.
  • Trying to access the TRYP by Wyndham hotel airside with checked bags that haven't been checked in yet: The hotel is behind international security in T3. If your outbound airline hasn't opened check-in (typically 6 hours before departure), you cannot drop checked bags and therefore cannot access the hotel. Many passengers book the TRYP for a 12-hour layover and then discover they're stuck landside with their suitcases. If this is your situation, use the Slaviero Fast Sleep in T2's public area instead — no boarding pass or security clearance required.
